Quality head rails are the backbone of an apartment vertical blind

Head rails are the backbone and life of a Vertical Blind. If you’ve got a top quality one, you will enjoy your blind for many years to come as it operates with minimal issues. If you have a low quality 1” x 1” Head Rail, you will you’ll end up annoyed with constant repairs or perhaps replacements, leading to a waste of your time and cash.
 
Unfortunately, folks purchase Vertical Blinds that use low grade head rails as a result of big box stores selling imported blinds rather cheaply. Rather than taking the long term operation of a blind in to consideration, they decide on whatever is the cheapest at the moment, not realizing that a blind that usually breaks down could be a blind that constantly needs to be repaired or perhaps replaced.

What makes a good quality head rail? There are several key components however it all starts and ends with the carrier.  Plenty of manufacturers use what is referred to as an 8 prong carrier (see picture). This type of carrier is NOT designed for long term or heavy usage. It will misalign quickly and soon you will have vanes that are facing in different directions or even spinning out of control.
 
Other fabricators use another type called the Self-Aligning Carrier. It’s a step up from the 8 prong and it’s designed to realign itself whenever it misaligns. It will last a lot longer.  This is head rail is known with most blind companies as their top of line deluxe vertical blind.  JT Blinds also carries this head rail; we call it EZ Glide which traverses smoother than most.

Why do verticals get a bad rep?

It’s a chilly and gloomy day here in the Golden State and I’m sitting here at home on my pc reading about vertical blinds. As the owner of a vertical blind fabrication company, I’m disappointed regarding the information offered online with reference to sensible vertical blinds for living accommodations. So many of the articles that I found had topics like, “How to cover up your ugly vertical blinds,” “Don’t be afraid to take down your vertical blinds, we did” and “How to repair your vertical blinds.” Vertical blinds appear to have received a bad reputation, but why? In my analysis I even have discovered that several imported vertical blinds use the lowest quality of parts for apartments and I will tell you why, but first let me share many facts regarding vertical blinds. First off, they work extremely well on large windows and sliding patio doors. You also get the best light control by tilting the blinds and you can draw them one way to the left or the right, as well as center opening to both left and right sides. Verticals that are operated by a wand are child and pet safe. And lastly, when a vertical blind vane breaks, you will be able to simply replace it rather than having to shop for complete new blind as you would when something similar happens to a horizontal blind. The bad reputation of a vertical blind simply boils down to the poor quality of merchandise within the market. The self aligning head rail is reliable and can operate efficiently for at least a few years in a rental unit. The replaceable stem scissor or plastic strap with the slim steel head rail is the cause of poor quality in a vertical blind and most contractors use this product strictly due to its low cost and selling price. If their budgets allowed for a few dollars more per blind, then the bad reputation of a vertical blind could be restored. After years of sun exposure, PVC vanes can become brittle and break. Can window blind companies manufacture a better vertical blind slat? Well the answer is “yes.” The thicker a slat is, the longer it will last. PVC manufactured for the apartment commercial marketplace has a general gauge of 0.022 of an inch thickness, while PVC manufactured for residential use has a general gauge of 0.030. It all comes down to dollars and sense with the marketplace. After serving the multifamily housing industry for more than 20 years, I have seen how most property and service managers look at the lowest cost for their budgets. It doesn’t make sense to me how property management companies will increase budgets for granite counter tops, hardwood floors, and stainless steel appliances but not increase their budgets for a quality long lasting window blind. Having a long lasting blind will save time and money without even being considered a true upgrade for an apartment unit. In addition to just replacing the vanes with new ones, there’s another choice called Vane Savers. The general public is unaware of this cool little part that can fit in a tool box or perhaps in a pocket. The Vane Saver is made of a clear plastic or metal tab that attaches to the top of a broken vane for an easy repair.
